EPISODE 82

The Chief inspector turned to Harvey.  “I appreciate the fact that you came straight over, but I do wish that you had been able to advise me earlier.  I appreciate that something was going on that you couldn’t tell me in their company, but you can tell me now.”
  Harvey looked at Chief Inspector O’Reilly with uncertainty.  “I am sorry, but I am not exactly following you.  Tell you what?”
  “Why you wanted them free when you knew they were guilty.  There is no need to keep pretending, Harvey.  I am fully aware that you are lying about their involvement, though I must admit your injury looks pretty convincing.  However, I doubt that it had anything to do with your coming here, other than a being a reasonable cosmetic confirmation of your made-up story.

  “I’m sorry, Chief Inspector, but we needed things to happen the way that they did in order to see what happened next, which is what we are now waiting for.”   The chief inspector and Harvey swung around in surprise at the unexpected voice, but Joseph chose to ignore their surprised look.
  “Chief inspector O’Reilly, could we see you alone for a few moments, please?”  Joseph asked.  “There is something that you need to know … and you probably won’t like it.”

  Chief Inspector O’Reilly shrugged and shook his head. He knew that this was going to be one of those nights.  He ushered Joseph and Harvey upstairs and into his private office on the second floor, leaving a worn out, and totally perplexed, Constable Jervis to regain his position on the chair behind the counter. The very second that he sat down Ben allowed his face to fall down towards the safety of the two open hands that lay on the desk top awaiting its arrival.  Then closed his eyes and mind to everything that had been with them on this awful, woeful day: closed so hard, so tight he was all but fully asleep within seconds; however, that level of safety took him two more seconds to reach.  And then, not even the jibes and sounds of raucous laughter at his current mental state from his two co-workers managed to enter his sanctuary.  For the moment, Constable Ben Jervis felt safe … and happy.
